Mysteries of Light

On Wednesday, October 16, 2002 Pope John Paul announced the addition of five new "Mysteries of Light" to the centuries' old devotion of the Most Holy Rosary. These five new meditations are:

• Christ's baptism in the Jordan River.
• The marriage of Cana.
• Christ's announcement of the kingdom of God
• The Transfiguration
• The institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper.

In his Apostolic Letter, "Rosarium Virginis Mariae" (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary) the Pope said that he did not wish to change the rosary but to contribute to its evolution as a prayer form.

In addition, he is announcing the beginning of the "Year of the Rosary" which will extend from mid-October 2002 to October 2003.
