“Voight is quite extraordinary. Besides doing a spot-on impersonation of Pope John Paul’s public persona, he ages most convincingly... It’s a heart wrenching portrayal. Pope Benedict XVI attended the world premiere screening and at the conclusion blessed the miniseries - the ultimate endorsement!” —Harry Forbes, Catholic News Service
“Watching this film has renewed in me a sense of profound gratitude to God for having given the Church and the world a Pope of such an exalted human and spiritual nature.” —Pope Benedict XVI
"Although shot on a lavish scale in Italy, Poland and elsewhere, 'Pope John Paul II' succeeds on intimate terms even when troops are marching or huge crowds are filling St. Peter's Square, and Elwes and Voight are largely responsible. The movie is honestly and actually about something... It's the ability to instill joy in human hearts, and the film not only celebrates it but, in its finest moments, even possesses it." —The Washington Post
"Voight stands out... he closely mirrors our image of the pope as a person: that mix of majesty and humility, humor and steel." —USA Today
"Writer-director John Kent Harrison wisely finds a narrative focus... as the pope stares down the unraveling Soviets hoping to help free his native Poland. More than anything, Voight's performance... taps into John Paul's emotional life... it's a remarkable performance." —Variety
"Succeeds brilliantly... it does reveal why most of those who criticized [Pope John Paul II] also loved him." —Pittsburg Post-Gazette
"Elwes... deftly depicts the internal struggle that finally drove Wojtyla to be trained for the priesthood. [This film] understands the importance of taking the time to see Pope John Paul II as a fully rounded human being as opposed to a hollow icon." —Seattle Post-Intelligencer
This book also takes us behind the scenes of the May 13, 1981 assassination attempt on the Pope in St. Peter’s Square, shedding new light on this event by presenting it in the context of the Third Secret of Fatima. World Youth Days are also examined, revealing the incredible spiritual impact the Pope had on the young people as testified by many of the youth at WYD events all over the globe.

Edited by Sister Mary Ann Walsh, RSM Introduction by Bishop Wilton Gregory, President, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Foreword by Kofi Annan, Secretary-General, United Nations
When Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope on October 16, 1978, he became the first Slavic Pope in history and the first non-Italian in 455 years. Taking the name John Paul II, the new Pope delivered a message in his first homily in St. Peter's Square that has resounded throughout his entire papacy: "Be not afraid!"
Created for the occasion of his twenty-fifth anniversary as Pope, John Paul II: A Light for the World provides a celebration in photographs and words of the courageous pastor who guides more than one billion Catholics and has made his mark on history the world over. Elegantly designed and produced, John Paul II: A Light for the World features over 140 photographs--many of which seldom have been seen outside the Vatican--by official Vatican photographers who have captured the Pope's remarkable life and ministry for two and a half decades. These beautiful photographs are accompanied by selections from the Pope's own speeches and writings as well as essays and personal reflections by scholars and friends that provide insight into the public and private person of Pope John Paul II.
Organized into three sections--Pastor, Pilgrim, Prophet--more than forty essays by staff of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops explore the depth and breadth of the themes central to John Paul's papacy, while nearly thirty personal reflections by cardinals, bishops, and others who have had personal encounters with the Pope reveal his profoundly human, and often humorous, side.
A joint effort between the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic Communications Campaign and Sheed & Ward, John Paul II: A Light for the World is the definitive commemoration of John Paul II's twenty-fifth anniversary as Pope. The book opens with a personal greeting from Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Vatican Secretary of State; a foreword by Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations; an introduction by Bishop Wilton D. Gregory, president of the USCCB; and a historical sketch by John Thavis, Rome bureau chief for the Catholic News Service. Also featured in the volume is a comprehensive essential resources section that includes a history of the Pope's life and ministry; lists of canonizations and beatifications; his world travels, including visits to the United States; summaries of all his encyclicals, major Apostolic Constitutions, Exhortations, and Letters; and a complete chronological listing of his key papal writings. A glossary of terms and an index are also included. This book is an invaluable resource and keepsake for Catholics, spiritual seekers, those interested in history, and anyone who has been moved by the witness and hopeful message of John Paul II, who is truly a light for the world. On Wednesday, October 16, 2002 Pope John Paul announced the addition of five new Mysteries of Light to the centuries old devotion of the Most Holy Rosary. In this Apostolic Letter, the Pope said that he did not wish to change the rosary but to contribute to its evolution as a prayer form. Quantity
In October 2002, Pope John Paul II updated the prayers of the rosary for the first time in five centuries when he issued his Apostolic Letter “Rosarium Virginis Mariae.” Designating this the Year of the Rosary (October 2002 – October 2003), Pope John Paul II added a new set of “mysteries” – events in the lives of Jesus – for worshippers to reflect on the mystery of salvation and the role of Mary as intercessor. He has also invited the faithful to pray the rosary for peace. The rosary was standardized in the 16th century and called for contemplating on the fifteen mysteries, clustered in groups of five: the Joyful Mysteries of Christ’s birth, the Sorrowful Mysteries of his crucifixion, and the Glorious Mysteries of his resurrection.
Different mysteries are contemplated on each day, with the Glorious Mysteries repeated on Sundays. Now, on Thursday, the Pope asks Catholics to reflect on five Mysteries of Light: Christ’s baptism, his first miracle at Cana, his proclaiming the coming of the Kingdom of God, his Transfiguration in front of three disciples, and the institution of the Eucharist as a sacrament.
Mysteries of Light offers simple meditations written by Pope John Paul II on each of the 20 mysteries of the rosary, along with stunning 25 color illustrations (icons) woven throughout the text. 52 pages; Paperback Ligouri Publications Fall 2003.
