This book presents useful parallels between the spiritual teachings of Saint Alphonsus de Liguori (1696-1787), Doctor of Prayer, and the ministry of spiritual direction in the Church of the third millennium. In drawing out these parallels, With Open Heart looks not to Alphonsus’s teaching on spiritual direction itself but to his teaching on prayer. The author seeks to move the Redemptorist tradition forward so that it will speak to and meet the spiritual needs of today’s believing community in more practical and relevant ways. The author argues that the dynamics involved in Alphonsus’s simple and practical way of conversing familiarly with God can be extended to the direction process itself and form the basis of an updated Alphonsian approach to the ministry of spiritual direction.
A series of reflection questions at the end of each chapter helps the reader judge what relevance this adaptation of Alphonsus’s spiritual doctrine to current practices in spiritual direction might have for his or her own practice of the ministry.
With Open Heart is meant to serve as a practical resource for those interested in firmly rooting the practice of spiritual direction in the teachings of Alphonsus. 128 pages; Paperback, Ligouri Publications Fall 2003. Quantity
“It is moving to read the accounts of Guadalupe, sensitively written and steeped in tenderness. In them the Virgin Mary, the handmaid “who glorified the Lord” (Lk 1:46), reveals herself to Juan Diego as the Mother of the true God. As a sign, she gives him precious roses, and as he shows them to the Bishop, he discovers the blessed image of Our Lady imprinted on his tilma... Beloved Juan Diego, “the talking eagle,” shows us the way that leads to the ‘Dark Virgin’ of Tepeyac, that she may receive us in the depths of her heart, for she is the loving, compassionate Mother who guides us to the true God. Amen.” -HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER JOHN PAUL II, in the CANONIZATION OF JUAN DIEGO, July 31, 2002 48 pages; Paperback. Ligouri Publications Fall 2003 Quantity

In October 2002, Pope John Paul II updated the prayers of the rosary for the first time in five centuries when he issued his Apostolic Letter “Rosarium Virginis Mariae.” Designating this the Year of the Rosary (October 2002 – October 2003), Pope John Paul II added a new set of “mysteries” – events in the lives of Jesus – for worshippers to reflect on the mystery of salvation and the role of Mary as intercessor. He has also invited the faithful to pray the rosary for peace. The rosary was standardized in the 16th century and called for contemplating on the fifteen mysteries, clustered in groups of five: the Joyful Mysteries of Christ’s birth, the Sorrowful Mysteries of his crucifixion, and the Glorious Mysteries of his resurrection.
Different mysteries are contemplated on each day, with the Glorious Mysteries repeated on Sundays. Now, on Thursday, the Pope asks Catholics to reflect on five Mysteries of Light: Christ’s baptism, his first miracle at Cana, his proclaiming the coming of the Kingdom of God, his Transfiguration in front of three disciples, and the institution of the Eucharist as a sacrament.
Mysteries of Light offers simple meditations written by Pope John Paul II on each of the 20 mysteries of the rosary, along with stunning 25 color illustrations (icons) woven throughout the text. 52 pages; Paperback Ligouri Publications Fall 2003. Quantity
